1978 5.7l pre-alpha with alpha gen 1 drive over heating

Yeah since I don’t have milky oil I’m leaning more against cracked head/ blown head gasket.

Ok I got ya. Wasn’t thinking about cracked block. Just worried about the heads. Thanks.

Ok I will grab the gauges. Guess the higher compression could lift the head and push the gasses through gasket to the coolant passage. Where a cracked head would leak easier and even easier when it warms up. Wish I could save time. Just want to get this thing in the water. Thanks for all the...

1978 5.7l pre-alpha with alpha gen 1 drive over heating

I appreciate your input. But if it is a blown head gasket and I pressurize the coolant system. Wouldn’t I not it leak just the same as a cracked head? Always open to ideas anyhow. Just want to know the logic.

1978 5.7l pre-alpha with alpha gen 1 drive over heating

I just figured either way it’s getting water in the pistons 4 and 6. From the washed plugs. It’s also gurgling when I shut it down so I’m assuming it’s pushing Water into those cylinders. And the exhaust starts getting steamy after it warms up. By pressure I meant pressure the coolant journals...

It’s a cheap Amazon one tester. Lost my good tester. It always reads low. Like 20 psi ish. So basically I was more looking for cylinder balance.

1978 5.7l pre-alpha with alpha gen 1 drive over heating

The motor was cold and WOT with all plugs out when I tested for compression. The reason I am thinking this is the issue because I know the motor was over heated from the broken water tube when I first bought it from my brother in law. Once it gets warm it steams pretty good in the drive way out...

1978 5.7l pre-alpha with alpha gen 1 drive over heating

After new 140 thermostat and checking for water pressure on the water intake hose. Nothing seemed to work. So did a compression check. So it’s blown head gasket or cracked head. Yay.

1978 5.7l pre-alpha with alpha gen 1 drive over heating

The tube that broke was up in the gimbal housing. So the impeller was always pushing water up to the bell housing. So should have stayed cool. But I did the whole housing kit base cap gaskets and all with impeller. But I will try holding the water back to see if it’s loading pressure along the...

ok thanks the drive is a alpha gen 1. Came off my other boat but did the whole kit base, impeller, cap and all. The gimbal housing is MC 1 though. Will drop it to 140. See how it goes.

Ok thanks. what temps should the exhaust manifolds be around?

1978 5.7l pre-alpha with alpha gen 1 drive over heating

Thanks for the replies. The water hose isn’t kinked. I double checked it. I will toss an 140 in there and see if it helps. I know mecruisers usually run 140. But figured a 160 would be ok. Feel like SBCs like some more heat to them but never know. I replaced the whole housing when I did the...

1978 5.7l pre-alpha with alpha gen 1 drive over heating

Got the boat with a broken water tube (brass tube through gimbal housing) from my brother in law. So i replaced it, along with gimbal, bellows etc. Water tested the boat. It kept cool at lower rpms (>2500). But when tried to get it up on plane it started climbing. No sure the temp but was...
