Water in Bilge? Where can it come from.......

Mine was a hole in the y-pipe caused by a shed water shutters. Found it sticking my cell phone down underneath things while the boat was in water but not running.

    Merccruiser taking on water.

My 4.3l mercruiser shed both water shutters, one jammed in the y-pipe just inside the transom and wore a hole through the y-pipe. Cold water leak into the bilge when the hull was in the water, but nothing running on muffs. Clean water though, no gassy or oily stuff.

1992 4.3L alpha one gen 2 Water Shutters

On the off chance that the local boat shop might actually have the parts in stock I dropped by there. Sure enough they had them, genuine quicksilver parts - not sierra or some other aftermarket brand. Interesting that the A3 shutters are $94 for a pair (as in 2 complete assemblies for a...

1992 4.3L alpha one gen 2 Water Shutters

Yes, understand. What I'm wondering though is if the shutters will unseat themselves when the lower exhaust rubber is slid up into place on the cast elbow. I.e. what, if anything, holds them in place? I haven't got them yet so maybe it will be obvious when I see them.

1992 4.3L alpha one gen 2 Water Shutters

After reading, youtubing, reading more, I ordered the wrong shutters for my boat anyway. I ordered the 807166A1 shutters, but I believe I need the A3 shutters. My old shutters were the one piece offset pin flapper design that mounted a bit below the end of the y-pipe with round holes in the...

    Mercruiser alpha one gen 2, 4.3l. 1992

Thank you. I have more room to lower the front of the engine than I do to raise it, but I do have 3/4" or so it could be raised. I've been messing with raising and lower things and checking level. As near as I can tell with the transom mounts vertical, the original front mounts are level (and...

    Mercruiser alpha one gen 2, 4.3l. 1992

Pulled motor to access y-pipe holed by flapper pin. Boat is a 19' welded and riveted aluminum v hull fish / ski open bow boat. The front engine mounts are a mess. They are a welded aluminum box backed up with plywood. One has slightly buckled, the aluminum surface the front mounts rest on...

    Hole in y-manifold casting

Nevermind, I managed to fold the flapper with a couple pair of needlenose pliers and get it out. I also found the starboard side flapper and got it out. Only thing missing, I think, is the pins the flappers mount to.

    Hole in y-manifold casting

I worked the port side flapper out to the end of the gimbal exhaust port but I Can't get it around the upper shift shaft that neatly bisect the exhaust. I loosened the set screw on the head of the shift lever shaft but I cant turn the shaft. Is there a trick or is it just stuck?

    Hole in y-manifold casting

With the outdrive off I can see part of one flapper way back in there, probably about where the hole is. No signs of any other parts and pieces.

    Hole in y-manifold casting

Yup. Pulled other side. No flapper there either, but I did find the holes on each side of the y- pipe for the pivot pin, then looked and found them on the port side as well. No trace of the flappers themselves. Outdrive next I guess and see if parts and pieces are stuck there someplace.

    Hole in y-manifold casting

Pulled exhaust tubes and elbow on port side. There is no flapper at the top of the y-tube. I believe I've read there was an early version with the water shutter down near the transom instead of up at the top of the y tube (?). I'll pull the other side shortly.

    Hole in y-manifold casting

Thanks. I figured it was easy. Step 1, pull outdrive, step 2 pull motor, step 3 pull y-pipe. I was wondering if blown flappers could cause this. There are metal shavings or burrs around the hole, it just doesn't look like a weak spot in the casting.

    Hole in y-manifold casting

Backstory - We have a early 90's merc i/o boat. 4.3l alpha one gen 2 outdrive. It's been in storage for 10 years (life), last time we used it it was leaking badly but I couldn't figure out where the water was coming from. This spring I finally had time and inclination to clean up the boat...
