Which gearcase lube for 1960 Lighttwin?

Hello, I was wondering what type of oil I should use in the gearcase of my 1960 Evinrude Lighttwin 3 HP? It is the no shift model with the weedless drive. Above the drain fill plug is says "fill with hypoid oil", but it doesn't state the viscosity. I have a bottle of OMC hi-vis gearcase...

    Charging Deep Cycle Batteries

I recently bought a new charger for my deep cycle battery. The charger has 2 amp outputs 2A and 12A. Which one should I use for charging the battery? The battery is a regular lead-acid deep cycle. I don't care about the length of charge time, I want to know if the lower rate is better for...

    Spark Plug compatibility question

I have an older 3.5HP outboard, and the repair manual lists the spark plug as Champion H8J. The closest plug I could find is a J8C. Is this plug compatible? I know that the 8 refers to the heat range, but what does the H, J, and C stand for? Thanks for the help. H&H

    oil for air-cooled outboard

I recently purchased a boat that came with a 1967 Viking (Chrysler) 3.5 HP motor. The powerhead is air-cooled and I was wondering if is should use T3-WC oil (water cooled) or a premix oil for air cooled 2-stroke motors ie. chainsaw oil. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks H&H

oil mixture for 1960 3HP Lighttwin

Hi guys, What is the correct oil mixture for a 1960 Evinrude Lighttwin 3HP? On the motor it says to mix at a 24:1 ratio with SAE 30, but I have heard that with today's oil it it okay to use a 50:1 mixture. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, H&H

    Johnson Evinrude Parts Catalog

Is anyone else having trouble connecting to the online J/E Parts catalog? <http://epc.brp.com> This was a great site where you could get entire engine diagrams complete with part# listings for J/E outboards from the '60s to the present. I haven't been able to access the site anymore and I was...

Can a faulty ignition switch cause weak spark?

Hello Everyone, I am having spark troubles with my 1979 Johnson 40HP. I have checked the points, replaced the ignition coils and the driver coil, and checked the safety switch and all the wiring connections, but I am still getting a weak spark on both cylinders. The spark is a little better...

    Weak Spark on 40HP Johnson

I had my motor running fine at the end of last season, but when I tried to start it this year it wouldn't start, not even a hiccup. The motor is getting fuel and the compression is fine. When I checked the spark it was weak on both cylinders - a little stronger on the top, but too weak to...

    2 cylinder firing order?

Hello, I have been doing some troubleshooting on my ignition system. I disconnected the wiring harnesses between the diver coil and the two ignition coils. Now I can-t remember which wire connects to which coil. The wires are numbered 1 and 2 which i assume means cylinder 1 and two...

Stator testing for '79 40HP Johnson

Hello, I'm looking for some advice on how to test the stator on my motor, model# 40R79E. The motor won't start, and I checked the spark and it was weak so I replaced the secondary coils. The spark did not improve so now I suspect that the primary coils under the flywheel are to blame. Is...

    Proper Shfting Technique

I was reading some old posts about people wearing the clutch dog out because they did not shift the motor properly. It was recomended that you shift the motor quickly from neutral to forward. My question is- Is it okay to shift directly from reverse to forward or vice versa without stopping in...

I am looking to buy a used kicker for my fishing boat. The boat is a 16' fiberglass with a 40 HP Johnson 2-stroke. The current motor gives me a top speed of 25mph and cruises comfortably at 20mph (according to the GPS). I am looking for a small outboard for trolling for salmon, and as a backup...

How do I seal the water pump?

I am in the process of reassembling the gear case on my 1979 Johnson 40HP. When I disassembled the unit I noticed that there was not any gaskets between the impeller plate and the gearcase, nor between the water pump housing and the plate. I checked the parts list on the BRP website and it...

    substitute for OMC Adhesive "M"

I'm in the process of reassembling the gearcase on my '79 40hp and the manual calls for OMC Adhesive M for sealing the gearcase halves and spaghetti seal. My local marine parts store doesn't carry adhesive M, so I am looking for a good substitute to use instead. I have never see the stuff...

I went to change the lower end fluid today and when I opened the drain plug a stream of water came out rather than oil! After the gear case was about half empty some thick, dark, sludgy oil began to slowly exit the drain. I bought the motor last year and have only used it about 10 hours...
