pitted crankshaft

I am in the process of having my 140 1985 VRO rebuilt. My mechanic informed me that there is pitting on the crankshaft and it needs to be replaced entirely. He also mentioned the cost of a
remanufactured one is roughly $500. Just curious why they can't be repaired instead of replaced.<br...

Small chunk of aluminum missing around water jacket- will this effect my rebuild

A mechanic is breaking down my engine (85 140 VRO)
for a rebuild. Tnere is 1 small chunk (and several minute fragments) of metal missing on top side of the water jacket facing the cylinder side but not touching the cylinder sleeve.
Is this caused by the aluminum becoming porous? Is...

    Crossflow vs.Looper -Difference in metal?

Just got back from a boat yard. Mechanic refuses to do a rebuild on my engine because it is a looper
(140 85 VRO). Says that the aluminum used on these engines (OMC) tend to be porous - BUT if the engine was a crossflow, he would tackle it.(made it sound that they are better constructed...

Does a new rebuild need a decarb?

    I'm planning to rebuild a 1985 140 VRO.
The mechanic wants to do a winterization at the end of the season that includes a decarb. Is this really necessary since the engine with rebuild would only have a max of 10-20 hours.

    140 85 VRO rebuild concern

I am reconsidering a rebuild after a mechanic lined up to the job backed out. Other mechanics
fold me that I'd be wasting my $$$ on an 18 year old engine while a couple of others didn't suggest there would be a problem and it was worth fixing. I'm leaning towards doing the rebuild and I'm...

Thanks Dhadley- Small bore?/ Large bore?

I'm a little confused. This piston diameter on this engine looks rather large- roughly 4 inches. Does a 85 140 rude come with a smaller sized piston or was this engine modified. The top of the pistons are flat headed. Sorry for being such a "greenie"
but I am eager to learn and I want to...

Hi Dhadley & Crew- Questions on rebuilding engine

Hi Crew- I've come to a crossroad in rebuilding this 85 Evinrude with a detonated piston.
The parts + bore are not unreasonable but the
labor costs to dissamble the engine would be extremely high. Everyone I consulted with said it wouldn't be worth the $ I needed to spend. So...

Dhadley # 685- I'm responding to your reply

Thanks Dhadley for responding about my 1985 VRO
that has a detonated piston. Yes- I now believe
water was the cause of the problem. Had it last year and I simply thought it was water in the fuel because engine would bog down.
Drained tank (got at least 1 pint of water) as much as...

Also water leak.
Replaced gasket and compression went up to 90+
Ran fantastic for the next 2 weeks<br...

    Compression on 85' 140 VRO

A spark plug "steamed cleaned" led me to believe that my bogging down problems were related to water entering my top right cylinder. Upon removing the head gasket there was an area that looked scored-
also some score marks on the top of the piston head- almost if the spark was arching (did...

Gas Tank cleaning- How safe is it to do?

I've posted several discussions regrding my 140 VRO bogging down at WOT
Found a loose connection of tubing running from
gas intake nipple to inline fuel filter.
Now engine runs more cosistantly correct at WOT-
and when it does bog down (still does but not as much) it runs...

Idea of using 2 water separators

Recently I drained close to 3 gallons of gasoline
from my fuel tank because of wate in my fuel.
I thought the pick up tube in the gas tank was located at the lowest point in the tank and by
pumping the primer bulb (disconnected from the engine) and emptying out part of the tank...

What causes a vro engine to run rich

Getting a great education on this forum and I'm still trying to troubleshoot the reasons my 140 rude vro stalls after warmuup and gear engagement. Runs great sometimes at W.O.T and sometimes she bogs down. For the exception of 1 plug, all look a little on the blackish side. ALL 4 of the them...

Just got back from troubleshooting my 140 vro.
Engine has been stalling when put in reverse after usual warmup. When running at WOT sometimes she runs like champ and sometimes she'd bog down.
Suspecting water in the tank. I removed at least 3 gallons of gas (series pumping some...
