Lake just froze shut completely yesterday, if we get the 9" of snow that is predicted the ice will flood again. This will prevent the army of ice castles from deploying. This is a good thing.

used to fly into San Diego every 2 weeks from late 1995 thru late 1998 for work. weather is nice
Have an office in La Joya.

Had an offer to move there when they closed the mfg. facility here in 2003. Bad timing with the kids. Not a fan of the business culture.

Ended up doing 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off for 10 months after the move.

Still have family and friends in the area. Try to get out there every other year or so.

I heat my house for the most part with wood. If you don’t count the labor it’s free. I’ve been using more than usual, going to have to start to conserve if this keeps up so I don’t run out.

I hand split oak for years then switched to corn now I have a remote to a gas fireplace. I hit the easy button when I moved.

I heat with wood as well and have been trying to find time to get ahead on the stacks but I’m stating to see myself splitting in not so nice conditions. I need to just take some time off and get it done before it’s to late.

This years wood is taken care of. I’ve been busy just about every day as late getting my wood cut split and stacked for next year. Mostly white and red oak. Even at a year seasoned it’s not optimal. I split it kinda small, helps it season a bit faster.

can someone tell me how many cords of wood they use during their heating season?
I generally use between 4 and 5 cords. A lot depends on how you heat and what kind of stove, and what kind of wood. I don’t heat the upstairs bedrooms, or the family room on the foundation level. That saves me a lot of wood. My stove is not catalytic. In theory that means I burn a little less efficiently. I do use a stove with secondary tubes. That helps to burn the smoke for more heat. Wood type is also a factor. Good seasoned hardwood will get more burn time and create more heat. Softer woods like poplar burn fast so you’ll be using a lot more.

Ya'll use that much wood

Cord = 4ft high x 4ft wide x 8ft long
Rick = width varies but in most cases 16 inch and x 4ft x 8ft

Can get about 3 Ricks out of a Cord

I don’t know for sure as I don’t pay any attention but likely around 1 1/2 cords. I have an endless supply of free wood so it’s not something I can track by how much I would order. I only heat 700sq and only use a lot for January and February. I have a wood stove that is very efficient as well. I burn mostly oak but at the moment I’m going through a stack of maple. It burns faster but the coals last longer so it evens out I guess.

My brother and sister inlaw live in the Berkshires they are artsy fartsy flaky hippie type senior citizens. And as always ill organized for the winter. I used to go visit them in the early fall to help them split and stack the six or seven full cords they need every winter. This year I thought to skip the thing and go to Costa Rica instead. But good old guilt came knocking at my door and at the same time I saw a 27 ton log splitter for sale in a local swap sheet. It was put up for sale by somebody who had bought it like ten years ago with the idea that she was going to use wood only but she never used it past the first season. So I bought it, changed the hydraulic oil, cleaned the carburetor, put in fresh fuel and it started right up. I hooked it to my Pathfinder and drove 360 miles with this early christmas present riding behind me on the through way. It is probably the best present I have given these two flakes.
