Over the last 15 years I have bought 3 outboards from OnlineOutboards.com. A 25 Yamaha, and 3.5 and 5.0 Mercs. The bottom line price was significantly lower than from a local dealer. Hanging the motor and pouring in the free bottle of oil was the only prep needed.Only your state's sales tax.
No title, if you need one, that is a state fee.
No dealer prep.
Free shipping with lift gate truck service.
Free oil.
Free fuel tank and hose.

Last month, it included a free maintenance kit, (complete water pump, fuel filter, water separating fuel filter, spark plugs, oil filter, ).
Millions of SBC have been made over decades with a huge customer base. Racing, recreational, industrial, boats,SUV,trucks, cars etc. that put demands on parts, and upgrades. Aftermarket companies dedicate huge resources to making sbc parts, and cross references/interchanges etc. Also the abundant supply of used parts. The outboard engine market is niche and barely a fraction of the size of automotive. And the reason why the small block Chevy will still be around?

Just like I can still get any part I need for a 4 bbl Quadrajet even though it hasn't been produced in 30 years!

Like any motor, if it is taken care of and maintained it will be fine. If you need a major repair/ overhaul, the labor won't be worthwhile. Many home mechanics can do two stroke motors but can't handle the more complex four stroke engines. The additional parts and labor in a major repair will be the deciding factor.I'll let you know in 30 years, my Yamaha is already 21 years old lol.
Very good point! There is one fly in the ointment. With the advent of computer aided design (CAD), it is much cheaper to design new engines, car bodies etc., than it used to be.
This means that OEMs can economically change the design of their products more often, to make them better or cheaper. That means that parts from newer engines are increasingly becoming different from parts of older engines.
