1982 Evinrude 90 hp

I have a 1982 Evinrude 90 HP that runs fine on ear muffs but boggs down and dies in the water. Any thoughts where i should start to look?

I concur, compression test first. In general outboards will run fine in a barrel but under load will run poorly or die. Many conditions will cause this.

If compression is even on all cylinders (w/i 10%), get a 10-$15 spark tester at an auto parts store, and check each wire (plug removed). Spark should be sharp and loud. If you want to skip or at least delay spark testing, buy a new set, gap and install (gap is usually good out of the box, but doesn't hurt to just check.)
