    2 vent plugs?

It's not suppose to rachet in reverse. Going to get it ack together and tank test it.

    2 vent plugs?

Maybe I misread some of the posts but after removing the prop shaft assembly and simulating a shift into reverse by pushing in the plunger, it is hard to believe there is enough spring left to allow the clutch to push back against it to clear the reverse gear. The plunger in the picture is...

    2 vent plugs?

Guess the question I need to answer is what is keeping the clutch from backing off the reverse gear. Something with the spring? Nothing appeared to be physically damaged. Don't know how it could be the shift wedge. Wish I knew how it was reacting before I disassembled it but I wonder now...

    2 vent plugs?

No shift fork in this 40, it has a three step shift wedge that positions the spring loaded shift plunger and clutch.

    2 vent plugs?

sn 6E9 L 552857 The center plug does align with the shifter wedge, probably more towards it's top but I couldn't tell by looking into it because it's so small. The plug itself is smaller than the top and bottom ones and is the magnetic plug.

Shift Mechanism, interesting. When I can I will remove the plug and peek inside to see if/how it aligns with the shifter. Also I will try to interpret the sn number and post it, the tag is damaged and hard to read.

    2 vent plugs?

I'm not close to the outboard now but I think the top plug, the one above the plate was labeled "Wash". If I recall correctly it taps into the cavity for the water pump so it must be for flushing. I have a service manual but it is one that has every Yamaha built, hard to follow sometimes...

    2 vent plugs?

I missed some of that Jeff but the top plug is labeled Oil Level not the middle. racerone, there is a plug higher up closer to the pump for flushing. History: I changed the oil last year and didn't notice there were three plugs until the recent repair. I don't use the outboard much, I live...
