What year is this Merc 40 hp? What prop?

This is an older two stroke Merc 402, 40 hp, outboard. Serial number is 4039935. Can anyone tell me the age of this motor? By the way, this motor is in Canada, although I don't know if serial numbers are different up here. Also, what are the prop specs - shaft size, prop diameter, and pitch...

Have you ever lost an anchor this way?

OK, it's not really lost. We have a good idea of what part of the lake bottom it landed in. The other day, we were out fishing. The wind came up, and we wanted to keep the boat from drifting so that we could cast in an area that usually has lots of fish. So I asked her to "throw the anchor...

Tuning advice needed, and what sparkplug will work best for my 30 hp Johnson?

This is on a 2001 30 hp Johnson 2 stroke. It has electric start, which is a good thing as it does not like to start when cold. It has to spin quite a lot, with both the key pushed in (to activate enrichment) and the throttle lever raised, before it will start. The other day, we were fishing...

How to fix a broken lower unit? Advice needed

A friend borrowed my fishing boat and left it in the water at the dock with the motor damaged. He hadn't noticed the damage, but I immediately saw it after loading the boat on the trailer. It's a 30 hp Johnson, 2000 model year. Uploaded with ImageShack.us...

Any recommendations for a small inexpensive sailboat?

My sailing experience consists of going out with various friends in an assortment of sailboats from 16 to 24 feet in length. Since I only do this once or twice a year, I can't say that I've ever developed much expertise at this. I would like to improve my sailing skills, and would like to...

Where's the water pump on my Mercruiser?

I have a 1992 Sea Ray with a 4.3 Mercruiser that we bought new seventeen years ago. The water pump has never given trouble, and I've never touched it. I always assumed that the water pump was on the front of the engine, driven by a pulley and belt. But after looking through posts on this...

Auto shift props - are they still available?

I tried one of those auto shift stainless steel props a few years ago. The bang when they shifted scared me. It seemed as if that could take out the leg gears on the stern drive. So I returned the prop. Just wondering if they proved to be a bad design or if they are still sold.

What gas/oil mix ratio for Merc 2.5?

This is on a 2002 2.5 hp Merc two stroke. I've been mixing the gas and oil at 30-1. Is this too much oil? Is 50-1 suitable for these small motors? I use 50-1 on larger motors, but for some reason got into the habit of using 30-1 on the small ones.

Marine gear oil - is it different from regular gear oil?

I'm tired of paying nearly ten bucks a quart for marine gear oil to put in the leg of my outboards and inboard. Top quality 80 or 90 weight gear oil for automotive and industrial applications is two to three dollars. So, what's the difference, or is this just another rip off? If the less...

Does leg need a gasket or seal?

This is on the Johnson 30. It is the type where to remove the lower part of the leg one removes four bolts and and a nut. There is presently no gasket to seal the surfaces at that joint. Is it normal not to have a gasket or seal at that point? Without a gasket, won't water seep into the...

Overheating!! Head gasket? Blockage? Other causes?

This is on a 2000 model Johnson 30 2 cylinder two stroke. After extensive diagnosis, it was determined that the motor was overheating. Overheating causes the overheat sensor to cut back the RPMs until the engine cools. (The motor surges but will not build RPMs again until it cools. It has...

    How to set carb float??

This is on the 2000 model year Johnson 30 two stroke. With the fuel bowl removed and the carburetor held in operating position, there is about 1/4 inch of space between the outer top end of the float and the bottom of the carburetor body. What is the correct specification for the float...

Johnson 30 - How to remove carb??

I want to take the carb off this 2000 model year Johnson 30 hp two stroke for cleaning. The left carb mounting bolt has good access, but access to the right bolt is blocked by part of the carb, and the starter blocks access from the side. So I then looked at the starter mounts; Johnson...

Johnson 30 problem - fuel starvation or ??

This 2000 model year Johnson 30 two stroke starts fine. It also runs well at half or at full throttle, but only for a minute or so. It then loses power but does not stall. If the throttle remains wide open, it surges and momentarily tries to speed up but then again slows. It does this...
