I am wondering if I should start another thread? I want to be conscientious of the forum. But, i'm well past the initial query of how to get powerhead off. I can go either way...
I got some pics with a borescope that i am glad to post if helpful. I can see that 2 rings are off of cylinder 3...
I got powerhead off. I think I’m gonna start a new thread. Got water jacket and exhaust cover off. Not seeing any major cylinder damage from here, but missing, or can’t see two of the rings on that cylinder.
Thanks! Taking powerhead off to see if block is salvageable. No compression in C3. Looked inside and it looks like the rings, but this is new on my punch card. Hoping I can get away with a new piston and some work on the cylinder. She has been a great motor.
Hello all,
Just doing a sanity check. i have the merc repair manual for this motor and am removing the powerhead. I have everything off..The only thing im not sure of, and want confirmation for, is the shift linkage.
The only piece i saw to remove is the one included in the photo, taking...
More of the same...Is there some issue with quality control on these Mercury OEM parts?
I got the Mercury water pump rebuild kit
18-3446 - Water Pump Kit 46-70941A3
Got the mercury impeller Drive key 28-8M0032835
Was reassembling water pump and spent 30 minutes trying to get impeller into...
I just found a suggestion that says the "lip of the seal should be facing the outside" in an online manual. I've always thought that with an oil seal of any type the lip would face the contained oil, but maybe its the other way around
I've ordered the 2 linked Ebay listings. They are both OEM mercury. I am assuming/hoping that the bushing was maybe an off brand, and that these will fit correctly together
Man. It is tough with these old parts. I ordered a shiftshaft seal from marineengine. OEM part from the parts list(all attached to my motor by serial number). Got it and tried to install it in the old bushing>
I've never installed a shift shaft seal before. Tried to install using a mandrel...
Yeah.. Spent some more time with it, and it does go into reverse. Even with the shift shaft in without bushing or anything, its a little finicky. Sometimes it just doesn't want to go. I'm assuming maybe thats a worn out part of the gear box or something.
Hopefully when I get the parts I can get...
It did shift into reverse before when I was using it, so I am assuming that is still the case. So if I'm able to get the shift shaft into the cam that is correct? I've never done it before. Trying to PASA(plan ahead, stay ahead) for when I actually resinstall in a week or 2
OK. I'm assuming this should stay in this topic.
Still waiting for water pump to arrive. Shift shaft oil seal is leaky, so removed shift shaft and ordered a new seal and O-ring.
Since I have some time before it arrives, I messed with trying to get the shift shaft seated again on the cam...
I am currently traveling for work, but plan to install the new waterpump when I'm back. Im getting concerned that, though the waterpump i installed might not be perfect, it is working, and that makes me think that the issue would be somewhere else.
To this point I have
-rebuilt water pump and...
I also seem to have an oil leak coming from the shift shaft. I don't want to throw any more money at this until I figure out the coolant issue(hopefully solved with new waterpump).
I know I won't know for sure until i take this apart, but do the bushings tend to hold up? Would a leak typically...
by your definition it seems that the impeller/pump system is a bit weak.
I was getting water, but nowhere near what he was getting. I'm including my video for reference. Looked like about 4-5" max.
I also tried blowing air into the water tube and did get air coming out of engine block...
