No further progress due to the ice cold weather but I did see that the starter was engaging as it should without screeching.
This site is an absolute font of knowledge on all aspects of Johnson outboards.
Here's a photo of what the old motor attached to, just dragged it home...
Just acquired an old Johnson 140 which supposedly spent most of it's life in fresh water, no previous outboard experience and I would like to get this ready for a pre xmas outing. Garden hose will be connected to flushing muffs before firing it up and fuel/oil mixed 50 to 1.
Any advice much...
