Hi all. I am trying to remove the lower unit from my old Mercury 35 hp 1965 outboard. I have all the bolts out and it only comes down around 1/2 ". I notice that the gear linkage is moving but not coming away.
Is there a secret to getting this apart. I have used so much force I am bending...

This is a Mercury 7.5 hp outboard that was used in the sea but never flushed out. This is Salt. This photo speaks volumes as to why you flush a engine. I cleaned it out and it works a treat now.:facepalm:
I have just purchased the motor. I paid ?100 and the seller threw in the Mercontroller and cables. I cleaned out the carb, easy job so uncomplicated, chainsaws I more complicated. It was coughing on tick over, so a spray of WD40 when running on fast idle and it stopped the coughing. Pumping...

Thanks for the advise I have got her running. It was coughing on tickover, but I run her on fast idle and sprayed maintainance spray up into the coils and she runs fine on tick over and fast idle.
She is peeing like a horse. I need to replace the HT leads...
