my water pump gave way and I overheated my 96 48HP johnson outboard. repalced pump, and replace a melted temp unit. The engine seems to want to start but won't any suggestion on what I should check?

johnson 48hp 1996 dropped lower unit to replace water pump. After a ***** getting the shifter rod undone replace pump ok. but in the process I screwed up the lower shifting rod connection to the propeller shaft. Am I out of my element? should I take it to a professional to get it reconnected...
