? on Piston Rings

I am replacing the piston rings on my boat motor can anyone tell me if the gaps in the rings have to be on the opposite sides or can the be lined up , or does it matter?? thank you

If it's a 2-stroke it matters. There will be locating pins inside the grooves. That's where the gaps go. If it's a 4-stroke I put rings in 180 degrees apart, but I'm told that they migrate to a comfortable position anyhow, so placing them is fairly pointless.

And make sure you put the rings on the right grooves,not all rings are the same. most of the time the packaging will have the location on them
