A friend of mine just gave me a 16ft.flat john with a 40hp.Scott bailomatic. After a day of tinkering with it,I took it for its maiden voyage yesterday.
All went well. The only thing was,it's not near as fast as I thought it would be(around 15mph)I checked the throttle position at WOT and it's fully open. The motor sounds good, but a pooch.
I was wondering if anyone knows how they were rated (prop/crank/?)
Any info on the bailomatic(pros./cons)would be great too.
Thanks.

Re: Any Scott fans?

I've had a couple of Scotts, Fixin.

Cobbled together a 33 from parts of a 30 and a 33 bought in a basket and put it on a 16' Sears Big Jon. Converted it from remote to tiller operation with tiller and parts off a 5.5 Johnny. She would plane and I would guess she would do between 20 and 25. That was about 40 years ago, so my memory may be distorted.

I am sure they were crank rated. I got parts from a recycler, the same guy I bought the basket of stuff from. It was a pretty good engine in my recollection.

My 5hp Scott Atwater was a jewel. In the same class as the JohnnyRudes of the time.

Good luck. :)

I worked as a mechanic for a McCulloch dealer, he sold saws,go carts and outboards the outboards we a pretty good products fot the most part, the little over the transom 7.5 were a problem and gave everyone around them fits, but the rest were dependable the 40 were faster than the OMC 40s when setup properly--Bob

I have a Scott Bail-O-Matic 7.5 and I love it. It starts right up 2nd-3rd pull evertime. Mine is either a '63 or a '64 model and I have had good luck on getting parts through McCulloch dealers. It definetly sounds like something is amiss with yours because mine will do 10-15mph on gps. Let me know if you need service manuels. They think I may have found one for a 40hp when I found mine. I'll have to dig them out and check.

Good Luck,

Mike M.
Richmond, VA

Check to be sure it is firing on both cylinders.
Check the compression.Ideal is around 100 lbs.
within 10% between cylinders. If all checks it may have a fuel distribution problem. Most likely a dirty carb.If it has sat alot you should go through the fuel system from tank to carb with special attention to cleaning.

Thanks for the replys,I went through the fuel system yesterday, but haven't had a chance to take it out.Seeing I spent most of the day looking for the plastic end of the float needle that I dropped.I still can't believe that I found it.Family BBQ today and parade tomorrow.Hopefully I'll take it out tomorrow afternoon.

**Update**
Took it out today, ran 24.8 mph.(gps)for about 15 min.then quit.started back up and sounds like it's running on one cylinder.I'll tear back into it tomorrow.
JB,
How difficult was it to switch to a tiller set up?
This boat has the remote(stick steer)set up,were you sit at the middle bench. :( I have a couple of older Johnyrudes (25 & 30 hp.)that I could use parts off of.

Pulled the plugs and #1 was fouled with a grayish substance.I think it's parts of the piston. Could it be something else? The plug was packed full of the stuff.

Try to peek into the plug hole.Check the compression.Plug should be a J4J(J4C).
I had a friend with a 14 McCulloch. While it was rated for regular gas it said 89 octane in the instructions.I don't think 87 octane would cause any troubles but he swore it ran better on 90 octane than the 87.I don't think octane is causing any problems for you other than maybe a rough idle or a little harder starting.
