Tilt/Trim Screeching During Lowering Of 97 Yamaha 150

During our last outting I noticed a screeching while lowering the engine (sort of like a razorblade going sideways down a chalkboard).

The screeching happens almost everytime the engine is lowered and only happens at 2 seconds after the outboard makes contact with the 2 lower rods. After 2 seconds of pushing them in, a screech is observed for about 1 second then goes away.

Why is this happening - are these rods supposed to be lubricated? If so, they are not; Although they appear clean, they are completely oil free.

Do I need to get some grease on them, if so what do I use? I have a new tube of grease with teflon...would that do? Do I just smear the grease on the rods?

Thanks again.

friction, I hate that sound.
scratches or any damage to shafts would indicate further damage of trim unit itself.
if trim fluid level is correct and there's no damage to them a light smearing grease is ok but as motor is tilted it will wipe most away so dont over do it.

grease my man grease
its called maintenance.
wipe some good yammalube grease on the tips of the ram as well as the wear pads. its common.
dont grease the trim or tilt shafts. the wiper will just wipe it off anyway.
good luck and keep posting

Go to additives and lubricants. Corrosion guard also works well. May be easier to find locally.

use yamalube grease or quicksilver special lube 101. both are very water resistant
that is why I said "yamalube grease" to many yamalubes

OH OK thanks. I am new to all this stuff so I am a bit slow.

Well, not reading your post yet I did put on some outboard engine oil onto the 3 shafts & the 2 ends of the lower shaft, and on the engine pads where the lower shafts contact and wella...the screaching is gone. I'll keep those shafts greased.

THANKS GUYS!
