Re: stator and trigger

The stator produces electrical power to charge the battery and run the ign. The trigger tells the switch box when to fire the coils

Trigger is under the flywheel.

The stater is under flywheel! The trigger is your distributor!

Re: stator and trigger

you can test your stator with a volt meter, set it to AC , and stick the test leads on the rectifiar at the terminals for the 2 yellow wires coming from under the flywheel.

at cranking speed, you should see some AC votlage there.

OR, simply check your battery votlage with a meter, engien off, and engine running, if the voltage is higher when its running, the stator is working.

the trigger is a tad harder to test, if it is like my 1970 800 was, then it contains a hall effect device, and 3 wires.

one of these 3 wires sends a reference votlage ( it was slightly less than the voltage feeding the switchbox - lossy devices inside)

that votlage is switched ON and OFF at the trigger by the rotation of the distributor.

that signal is fed back to the switchbox and tells the box when to drop the primary on the coil and light the fire.

I dont recall which wire does white ( white black and brown)

just power the ignition up, one will have 12V all teh time ( reference), and one will only have it intermittantly while the engine is spinning ( signal)

if youve got signal, your trigger is working.

Re: stator and trigger

Hold the phone...

The stator on this model is under the flywheel and ONLY charges the battery through the full wave bridge rectifier located on the inner front cowl support (small box). It has NOTHING to do with ignition assuming that Bat is fully charged.

Your ignition consists of a switchbox and trigger. The switchbox is located also on that front support, the trigger is part of the distributor. If wiring is correct red on the box outta be +12 all the time , white outta go +12 when key is on.

If you need a switchbox test with diagrams - just email me.

-W
