how old is my engine

i have a mercury 80 s/n 9358212 with a blue band round the engine does anyone know how old it is and why the band is blue?

It's out of the mid 70's. The band is blue because they changed from a red band to a blue band in 1972. <br /><br />-W

I get 1980/81 out of that serial number. Seems like that's a European number.

Ok.. I stand corrected. Most Blue bands are 70's but yes early 80's had them too. Then came the ugly BROWN band that lasted a couple seasons.<br /><br />-W

Have a look in www.myfishingpictures.com and under username "Unicorn" you will see some cowling/colour examples. a 1980-81 had Lt/Dk blue bands and a red HP with a distinctive silver "Mercury" text.<br />I know... I know.. I'm obsessed. <br />
