The leak on the poppet could be due to the diaphram being stuck to the inside meatal washer. this happened to me. I pulled the whole thing apart and cleaned it good. When I replaced the diaphram it worked like a charm. and yes, the gasket goes around the thermostat.

With the poppet stuck open at lower rpms, water is dumped into the exhaust preventing sufficient water flow around the block, thus you overheat it...

It should only open at higher rpms...

on the diaphram, there's a washer on the outside with a screw and it screws into the popit, along with spring etc before popit,, how tight do you tighten the screw, i took the whole thing out a tighten the screw pretty tight, washer, diaphram, then stuck it in the hole, is this not the way you do this

got it back together, for you all that have a temp gauge, what was your temp, where was the needle pointing, it didn't have any leaks from the poppit, and didn't run the motor to long on the hose and it got between halfway and 3/4 ways on the gauge,

I don't much about your poppet valve but your thermostats shoulb be 143 degrees.
If no responds, do a search or go to engine repair, maybe you can find the answer there.
