I have a 2003 40hp Mercury 2 stroke 3 cylinder 58.9ci The 50 is listed as same displacement same engine rpm, how does it make 10 more hp. I think the 60 is the same block as well also listed as 5000-5500 rpm

Re: Difference between 40 50 & 60

I have been trying to find the same info. On another board (screamandfly) one guy said he looked up the part numbers and it appears to be in the carbs and intake. I had local dealer look it up and he said carbs and exhuast tuner. I can't trade for a 50/60hp becuase they come with factory tilt/trim and I don't want that so if you find anything please post it.

This comes up time and time again. To make more hp out the same size block you have to spin it faster. To make it spin faster you have to make it get the fresh air/fuel in faster and more of it and the exhaust out faster. This means more agressive porting of the block, larger carbs, freer exhaust and higher compression. Doing so will move the engines peak torque curve into a higher rpm range. While this will make more HP at higher rpms it will lessen power at lower rpms

The only difference between 40 and 50 is the carbs. (and possibly the timing). The 60 has a different exhaust tube too. The block, pistons and reeds are all the same for all 3 engines, they even have the same part number on the merc parts disc.

Chris...........
