There's a large welch plug on the block. The model number should be there.

Re: Evinrude 70 hp

There is nothing wrong with it but was told it was a 96 mod and a boat macanic told me it was earlyer than that so I want to find out so I can get a Manual. Thanks you all for your help.

Lloydy

A 1996 model will have an "ED" near the end of the model number.Try to make out the entire model number if possible and repost.Someone can steer you toward the exact year model.

Re: Evinrude 70 hp

I have found out it is a 92 mod but now have another problem. I was cruising along close to full throttle and the engine just died and can only get it started again with the chock lever up
but as soon as I put it down to go it dies again.
Has any one have any ideia what could be causing this to happen.

Thanks Lloydy

make sure your gas line was connected in the right direction, arrow on bulb points toward engine. check you spark, compression, are plugs wet or dry. and post back.

Wet plugs often mean there isnt any spark. Have you done a spark test?

Re: Evinrude 70 hp

lloydy, is this motor new to you, when was the last time it was run prior to your problem. check for spark, if you can check compression, look at the coils, are they cracked, leaking discolored? was the gas fresh or did you use what was just in the tank? when was the last time the carbs were cleaned/rebuilt? let's start to narrow thing down. by the way welcome to boating University, i boats.

Re: Evinrude 70 hp

The boat is new to me but have taken it out 3 times prior to the break down. It sat around for about 4-5 years before I got it. The motor still runs with the chock leaver still up but sounds sick as soon as I put down the leaver it stops. I think you might be right about the carbs I going to put the boat in for a service and get them done. Thanks you all for your help. Great site and very helpfull.
