1986 70 hp johnson

Hello ...I'm new to this forum as well as being new to a 70hp johnson....my question is..what would cause a rectifier to overheat and burn up the wiring?thanx in advance for any clues

Welcome to the forum!<br /><br />Bad connection to your battery. The electricy has to have some place to go to..!<br /><br />Dont use wing nuts....!<br /><br /><br />Luck tu ya!

Thanx....if that was the case could it have caused any other damage to the elec system?

Rectifier will fail at some point on there own. Heat up what makes you think its heated up? Was there black stuff comming out of the back? Rectifiers run hot by what they due.Change AC to DC! You can get one on Ebay for 30 bucks

Dammage no when the fails they go to zero, a diode fails.

The wires going to it melted and i'm not sure if it was just the wire insulation dripping or if the rectifier itself was melting....but there was black <br />melted plastic dripping from the back of it.
