Tilt and trim went on on its own?!?!

After a weekend fishing trip with the new 2003 Johnson 50hp with tilt/trim I parked the boat in the back yard. About 10 hours later I woke up to a constant humming/screeching noise. At first it was intermittent, and figured it was the neighbor or something. Then it went on non stop. I ran down stairs to the garage, opened it and walked out to the boat. The trim was stuck on in the lowering position. I have one of those transom saver bars that hooks the engine to the trailer and it was pressing against that.

I have no clue what the problem was. When I pushed the trim/tilt button up on the motor it quit and was ok. I unhooked the battery just in case. The next morning I looked at all the wires and no problems, I then hooked up the battery and about 2 minutes later it did the intermittent thing again, and then went on again. Once again I hit the button to raise it up/stop it and it quit.

Any clue?

It could be a number of things. A faulty trim/tilt switch or possibly a wiring fault. I would also check out the two relays that control the tilt/trim. One of them may be faulty. They are reasonably cheap. They work together to control the lowering & raising. You really need a meter & wiring diagram to diagnose.

I did have to get a wiring adapter to hook up the 1995 control box to the 2003 engine. Could it possibly be faulty?

most likely the remote trim switch stuck. The rubber might have a crack in it if you look carefully. they are junk replace it and you should be good to go.

The only thing that I don't like is the fact that your trim motor was under load for a while. The brushes take a beating!

Hello,

I have had this problem with two of my boats. One was rigged with a 40HP Johnson...the other with a 50. In both cases it was corrosion on the contacts on the throttle mounted trim switch.
