hi, i recently dropped the gearcase on the 75' 25hp johnson to check water pump. All is well and i got put back together just fine. Started her up in a barrel of water and there was a good spray coming out of exhaust ports. BUT, when idiling it felt like it wanted to jump into gear. a catching sound, then a stall. figured it is the linking on the shifting rod that needs to be adjusted. Is there a method to figuring out which way to adjust it, up or down. <br />thanks a bunch.

Usually no adjustments are needed. However some hasnt luck getting the lower shift rod all the way up in bracket, and the bolt will sit above end of rod instead of in the grove ment for it. Then it will be close to jumping in gear. Same problem if bracket isnt all the way on upper rod.

That makes sense, but then what is the best way to go about ensuring that both rods are in the bracket correctly??? thanks for the reply.

If you remove the bolt when you slide the rod in, you can see when the groove is where it should be.
