1990 J120TLES

I broke the golden rule of boating and got my boat wet. The power t&t stopped working (on the most recent trip, had sporadic problem during previous use) after raising the motor to the point where the trim cylinders stop and the tilt cylinder takes over. I tried using the manual release but the motor will only lower to the point that the trim rods (extended fully) meet the motor. I don't understand why the bypass won't release the trim cylinders so I can get the motor all the way down.
I beached the boat (20' cc) for a few hours this weekend and went through my omc manual. I have power all the way down to the motor when the switch is pressed both up and down. I figured this meant I need to replace motor. A friend with a similar situation on an evinrude 150 said his ended up being the relays.

Questions:

1) why won't the manual release let the motor ALL the way down and retract the trim cylinders.

2) can you have power to the motor when the switch is engaged and it not be a trim motor problem but a relay issue instead?

Thanks for any help,
John

If your relays are supplying 12 volts to the motor, the motor is shot.I believe on your system, you have two wires to the motor. When operating, one wire gets positive for up,the other wire gets ground. For down, the polarity is reversed.

Sorry, but the manual release valve Does Not release the trim cylinders.I think if you apply real gentle throttle, you may get on plane by the Holiday.Starting NOW ! ! Just not sure which holiday.

DHP

Thanks DHP for the response. I wonder who the rocket surgeon was who designed a manual bypass that doesn't actually BYPASS the system. Guess I'll start looking for a T&T motor. BTW I did run it for a couple hours but the trim cylinders are not retracting. :(

Problem is there are 2 circuits in that pump. When you get it working again, notice the first up stage (trim) is a lot slower than (tilt)second stage.

DHP

I believe the later models, with the fast tract mid section, allows the motor to be manualy released to the full down position. Correct me if I am wrong!
