Ron...the correct plugs are a QL77JC4 or QL16V. Both Champions, set at .030. Stay with the recommended plug.

That motor's pretty sensative about heat range. I'd sure follow OBJ's advise and stick with what's recommended.

And make real sure the fuel is fresh and 87 octane. BTW -- 2 month old fuel isnt fresh. No matter how much new fuel you dump on top of it.

93 octane and KGB....errr..NGK in a Rude is a dangerous combo. NGK's belong in Yammies and Mercs. Champions belong in E/J's.

1993 175hp v6 60° eagle looper should have QL78YC Champions gapped @ 0.030" I believe. 1993 was the year they changed from the QL77JC4's. Correct??

You can use either the QL78YC's or the QL77JC4's. I prefer the slightly cooler 77's in mine.

Re: 175 johnson quick help

While your talking about plug gaps. I have a 1987 Evinrude XP150. I have a 1988 OMC service manual and it states to use QL77JC4 plugs and set the gap at .040". I see that on this thread that everyone is recommending .030" gap. Would someone be able to tell me the plug gap I should be using on my 1987 XP150, and are the QL77JC4's the correct plugs. Was there a recommended plug change from 87 to 88 on the XP/GT 150 OMC engine? Thanks for the consideration of my question.

I think that plug is fine as I run them in my '78 Johnny 150 as recommended. Most of the J/E's I've seen of this size do, but I suppose that's a better question for Dhadley. I think I read on here before that the larger gaps work better if you do a lot of idling and not as much WOT cruising, but hopefully one of the gurus will come and confirm or deny that for you. ;)

Thanks for the response, I will see if Dhadley or one of the other J/E gurus have any input.

Re: 175 johnson quick help

The correct plug and gap can be found in the current Genuine Parts Dealer Catalog, also see service bulletin 2292R1 which ref this catalog. Dealer should have these items. The 60 degree engines are also sensative to sparkplug wire type.

Re: 175 johnson quick help

Checking the current P&A BRP catalog, the current recommended plug for your engine is the Champion QL78YC set at .030. The associated bulletin does not recommend any alternates.

Re: 175 johnson quick help

Thanks for the response. I don't have access to a BRP catalog. Any parts book I do have access to (eg. Champion) list the QL16V as the recommended plug. Marine mechanics up here suggest just using the QL77JC4's. Is the QL78YC a surface gap plug like the QL16V? I have been told that if any amount of idling is done to stay away from the surface gap plugs and use a standard plug of similar heat range. (eg. QL77JC4) It's just confusing that the 1988 OMC service manual I have recommends QL77JC4's with .040 gap. Was there that big of a change from 87 to 88? Just curious.

Re: 175 johnson quick help

The engine should run fine with the QL77Jc4s gapped at .040 0r .030. The engine may idle a little smoother with the .030 gap. The QL78YC is a little hotter plug to burn clean at idle for a smoother idle. The GT/XP 150 should burn a QL77JC4 to the color of toast.
