Hi,

This weekend I put the boat in the water and my freshly rebuilt 1980 25 hp Evinrude on. The engine started fine and ran like clockwork, idled like a brand new engine. Took a few test spins and it pulled strongly and ran evenly for about 1 hour totally.
Then in the evening I went fishing with my oldest son and on the way out power decreased. Idling went down and now had some sneezing like it was lean, then it died completely and would not start again. Luckily we were not far away from home and could row back in 20 minutes.
The day after I took off the lid and found two anomalities...
Some of the screws that hold the exhaust side cover on the powerhead was coming out. Not enough to make it leak so I guess it could not be the problem. Also no sign of water on the plugs.
The fuel hose that goes from the pump to the carb had a kink just below the carb. I immediately thought I had found the problem, but it remained after I had straightened it out. Could that have caused any secondary problems?
Other observations...
- Fuel filter is clean.
- There is spark on both plugs although it was hard to se how strong it was in the daylight.
- Gas flows trough the pump and into the carb when primed, still no start, only the odd sneeze when the starter is pulled.
- Cooling is fine and the engine was not hot.
- Plugs look a bit wet and dark but that may come from the extra oil I have in this first tank of gas after the rebuild.
It has to be either fuel delivery or ignition related. Any suggestions on where to start looking?

Thanks,
Bjorn

Howdy pikefisher.

Go to the Engine FAQs and do the "Outboard wont start" troubleshooting.

Let us know what you find, and good luck. :)

Squirt some fuel into the carb and try to start it,if it starts momentarily you will know that the problem is fuel not ignition

When rebuilding an engine, it should include cleaning the carburetor. Maybe they did clean it? They should also replace any worn fuel hoses. Your hose or hoses may be deteriorating from the inside. I suggest that you pull the carburetor off and check for fuel hose debris.

Thank's all for the advice,
The hoses are new and the carb was overhauled as well, I did this rebuild myself. I did the powerhead, carb, carb hoses, water pump and lower unit (seal kit) while I was at it.
I will try the fuel squirt thing to determine if ignition or fuel delivery is the problem. I also need to check the fuel pump membrane as that is among the few things I havn't replaced as it looked well when I last saw it.
The symptoms were that it lost power just as I had backed off the trottle, no misfiring or anything. To me that feels fuel related but I'm not sure if ignitiuon problems could give similar symptoms.
Can't do anything until the weekend now as the engine is now on the boat at my summerhouse..

Hi PikeFisher. Do you feel even compression on both ? Check the reeds.

I how now disassembled the carb and it's clean and unclogged. I have checked the reeds and they check out well. There is full compression on both even though I can't measure it as my gauge fails. Spark seems strong on both and I can not only see it bur clearly hear it. Still this motor is stone dead and refuses to even try to start.
The float bowl fills up with gas fine but priming with the bulb does nothing to make it ignite. When checking the plugs after pulling and pulling with the choke out they look dry.
Tried priming it with gas directly in the carb and then it ignited with a sneeze and nothing more, that was repeatable.
I'm stuck on this and don't know what to check next.

From the sound of it, it's possible that the woodruff key on the flywheel has sheared. This can happen if the flywheel nut was not properly torqued.

I'd check that.

Check the taper on the crank and flywheel and make sure to torque the nut to the proper spec.
