I need an entire carb. or I have to find someone that carries more than the usual repair kit parts. The brass tube that runs vertically through the venturi section of the carb. is totally destroyed by corrosion. The bottom end of this tube is down in the carb. bowl with the main jet and the top end is up near the mixture adjustment needle. I have tried the Sierra repair kit #18-7223 but it does not contain the parts I need.

Anyone have an idea where to look for parts or an entire carb?

1988 Johnson, 4 hp, Model #J4RCCS, Serial #B 7625947

Try Twin Cities Outboard at:

http://www.tcoutboard.com

I'm sure they have many of these carbs on hand, and cheaper than a new one. They're good folks, and if they say the carb is OK, I'm sure it is.

Re: Need carb.

CATransplant. Thanks for the quick reply and the links. I checked ishopmarine and it was more than I found from anyone else. Unfortunatley the brass tube I need is pressed into the body of the carb and is not meant to be removed or replaced. It looks like the only way to get it is to buy the whole carb ($256).

Re: Need carb.

ishopmarine is a great resource for all J/E engines from 1968 on, and the place has the parts in stock.

Try finding a used carb, though. It doesn't seem worthwhile to buy a new one for that engine. There are so many of those around, broken in some other way. Try the tcoutboard.com site. Send 'em an email with your model number and ask if they have a good carb from a junked motor. They have just about everything.

Re: Need carb.

Thanks for the help CATransplant. I'm trading e-mails with Twin City looking for a used carb.

I played in the machine shop this weekend and was able to make a tube for the carb. The old one was eaten up so badly I'm not sure what I was supposed to be building so I was going by "feel". I've got the engine to idle well and run up through the mid range, but no top end. I'm pretty sure that I don't have the corect size or number of metering holes in the brass tube.

I'm going to have to break down and get another carb.
