year of lower unit??

Just got a lower unit for my 1978,140hp,v4.everything matches mine except this one has a cutout apparently for an anode or such 1" behing the six drain holes.does anyone know when they started with this cutout? Thanks

That started about 82 I believe. They kept that design until about 88 when the holes turned to slots.

Thanks Dhadley. Also the water pump which I need has a wedge for the driveshaft. My 78 has the same pump but it has a key on the drive.Do you know what pump I should get?

I think they started that in 85. Just get a pump kit for an 86 to be sure.
