Hi,

I'm gonna wax the new/used Grady in a few weeks and just realized I haven't got the right power tool for the job. Any suggestions on buffing/polishing tools to use/buy? Hopefully an affordable one....Thanks.

Also, any good sites for waxing/prepping a fiberglass hull? Thanks again.

The best for the job is a rotary circular polishing wheel. If you already have a good finish and just want to wax it then an orbital will be fine.Charlie

Meguire's 3-step does a nice job. Can't help you with power tools. I use elbow grease. Be careful with power, you can make a mess of it.

With wax you dont need a power tool. Just rub on...rub off by hand.

Rotary buff is good for the bulky areas, still have to use the arms for crevis' and intersections. Don't over do the pressure, it will make a mess.

As crazy charlie said, if ya don't need to 'cut' the surface, use a random orbital polisher. It's much easier than doing it by hand and you can't hurt the finish with one of these. If you have a Costco nearby I believe they have a better price than this link. These are great for doing your cars too.

http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?cid=52419&PAGE=PRODUCT&PROD_ID=20808&fp=F&kid=196729

If you need to cut the finish, you can't go wrong with kesso's tool but you don't need to spend that much money for something you won't use everday. This one will do just fine:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=90820

Re: Boat Waxing:What Power Tool To Use

The random orbital type are designed for waxing, not buffing. My suggestion: if you are waxing...do by hand, the result on gelcoat will be about the same. If you are considering buffing:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=46507
For limited use it would serve you well. On damaging gelcoat with buffing, or waxing..that would take a LOT of concentrated effort on a single small area. Unlike an auto finish, gelcoat is many times thicker and harder than any painted surface. That is why automotive type compound has a limited effect on the gelcoat.

Re: Boat Waxing:What Power Tool To Use

Now we're getting somewhere. Thanks to all who've replied.

kesso, normally I buy top of the line power tools, I like Makita, but I think I'll be using this for half a day, then I'm out to the mooring and won't be using it again till next spring. And some are saying no power tools needed at all.

There's 2 harbor freight tools in my price range, bounder's and Boomyall's replies. What's the difference? Some people are telling me to buy a tool that just spins, and doesn't do the "orbit"/oscilating thing. Others are saying I want the orbiting.........

Also, I need to back up a bit here, first nice glass boat, and new to gelcoat maitenance. "Polishing", "Buffing" and "Waxing" sort of mean the same to me. I'm planning on cleaning it with some good soap and water. Could someone explain the rest of the deal? I know wax goes on and gets rubbed in, but the buffing/polishing thing, is this refering to compounding or something other than wax?

Thanks again, springs almost here!!! :)

Re: Boat Waxing:What Power Tool To Use

If your boat has a decent finish on it that does not need a cutting compound, waxing, polishing, buffing with the random orbital unit;

http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?cid=52419&PAGE=PRODUCT&PROD_ID=20808&fp=F&kid=196729

..is the quickest, easiest and most efficient way to do it. If someone wants to do all that rubbing by hand, let them. Use it both to apply the wax and to buff it off. They come with both an applicator bonnet and a terry polishing bonnet. If you can get extras, I would. You'll be pleased.

Re: Boat Waxing:What Power Tool To Use

as boom said, it depends on the current condition. if your boat is in great shape, you could get away with waxing by hand. if you have light oxidation, the orbital buffer might do the trick. if you have heavy oxidation that returns shortly after waxing or a hull that looks great wet but not so great when dry, then in my opinion you'll want the polisher.

the buffer isn't as aggressive as the polisher, but you can do what the buffer does with the polisher. i've only used cheap buffers though.

from what i can tell with the 2 harbor freight polishers, one looks like a new model with an LED display and the other is the no-frills model.

the terms buffing, waxing, and polishing will be used somewhat inter-changably depending on who you talk to. technically, you buff with compound, polish with polish, and then cover with wax in that order. some jobs might not require all steps and some might require wet sanding before buffing.

to add another variable, some people spray 303 periodically and skip the wax entirely. i wouldn't do that in salt.

Re: Boat Waxing:What Power Tool To Use

Basically if the finish is dull or oxidized then you want to compound to bring up more shine and remove oxidation.

If the surface more like a semi gloss you want to polish. This will give you back the shine.

You alway want to wax after compounding or polishing. This will prolong the shine and protect the gelcoat/paint.

Depending on your gel/ paint the least you should do is wax and the most is compound then polish then wax.

Clear as Mud eh?

Re: Boat Waxing:What Power Tool To Use

For what's it worth...I would pick up a corded rotary buffer from walmart...it's the most affordable you'll find. What's more important is the media you use for buffing and your approach to using the tool. The power tools take nearly as long to get the job done, but are much easier. With a keen attention to detail, you can get a cleaner finish. Personally, elbow grease is for my 19'er. For the 24', get my black & decker and an extension cord. I wouldn't dare approach w/ elbow grease. Good luck.
