For those that have choosen to keep the VRO instead of premix, I have taken some pics of the old VRO recently dismounted from our Evinrude 225, 1994. We installed a new one, and the decision was OK, as you can see from the pics.

You will see that diafragms WILL break with time. I found the oil pump side diafragm broken. The fuel pump side diagram was in far better condition, no damage at all. It is stronger than the oil side diafragm and looks more robust.

Here you have the link. I hope it works.

http://home2.nikonnet.com/servlet/c...SSWORD=nikoneditor_-715889012&WHO=memberguest

Kesh:
Does it appear that the oil pump diaphragm could be field replaced? Is a replacemant diaphragm even available?

Charles

Re: Go change your old VRO !!!

I think that I heard that there are "kits" for the vro pumps....but I am not sure. However, I am glad that I replaced the entire VRO unit with a completely new one because I also noticed other small damages: cracks in some parts of the body (on the exterior side, I didnt find internal cracks), olds o-rings looking like not really tight on their seats, small oil leak in the top of the alarm circuitry box, etc.

The older vro are a non servicable unit, according to my 2 manuals.
I don't know about the newer ones.

Re: Go change your old VRO !!!

Just did a search and found several references to rebuilding VRO pumps, but I still have questions. I think maybe a trip to my repair shop might be worthwhile. They seem to be pretty knowledgeable and quite willing to help. Maybe they will have some suggestions. If the pump can be rebuilt, it sounded like a good winter project.

Charles

lol, I prefer by far the easy oil tank... I don't have to worry if someone else fills the gas tank and forgot the premix or lost the liters count, or dropped a piece of the plastic seal of the oil bottle in the gas tank, and I can definitely see the oil is being consumed from the tank level

Re: Go change your old VRO !!!

Just for your information, the diaphragms are the same for all the later VRO pumps and parts can be ordered from a 1999 or later parts book. That diaphragm is only for the fuel pump and the oil pump is a piston operated device. The cracking shown in the picture is on the fuel inlet side of the pump diaphragm. The oil piston "shoots" the correct amount of oil thru a hole from the oil pump side to the fuel inlet side of the VRO where it mixes with the incoming gasoline.

Seahorse:
So, is the damage/failure shown in Kesh's pictures actually the fuel pump going bad, rather than the oil pump?
Is there a site where a diagram of the internal workings of the VRO pump is shown?
Mine is working fine, but I think I'm going to have to tear it apart just to see how it does work. ;)
Would any factory OMC/Evinrude shop manuals show those parts?

Charles

Re: Go change your old VRO !!!

well, it is the first time I saw the inside of a vro... I saw a small piston and now Seahorse's explanation has sense to me. All I know is that the VRO has 2 diafragms, connected by a shaft. One diafragm is larger diameter than the other.

I don't know of anything on line, but the Jan 2000 Bass and Walleye Boats or the Feb 2000 Trailer Boats magazines had stories on the VRO with pictures and part numbers. It had the history, the changes, and diagrams of the pump assembly.

Re: Go change your old VRO !!!

Hello
well I am back from the Hurricane I think. I have not been to any recent OMC seminars but the last one we were told that only the fuel side was servicable. the oil diaphram can still fail and does occasionally. the first were not really self primeing and did not have alchohol resistant diaphrams. the VRO II had 3 wire alarms and alchohol resistant diaphams. the latest version is 4 wire self priming and better Diaphrams. the punmp still does not last forever. I reccomend 7 years max before replacement.and replace any 3 wire pump. always make sure the self test works on the alarm horn. and manually test the wires at least twice a year. more in rough service. I deal with a lot of crabbers and netters here so we try to check it every 30 days. the biggest problem i deal with is contaminated oil tanks and the old style filters.it is cheap insurance to spend 279 or so on a pump every 7 years.that is less than 50 dollars a year
cheap insurance for the motor:) :) .
Good luck and keep the oil flowing

Re: Go change your old VRO !!!

When I bought my new VRO pump last month, the mechanic said they have made 3 or 4 upgrades since 1995.
This confirms what you just said.

If you have a pump that is more than 5 years old, I would recommend changing it.
Mine was leaking gas, and fouling plugs (7 years old).

Re: Go change your old VRO !!!

CharlesW,

The later factory service manuals (99 and up) show step by step repair and rebuilding of the VRO pump.

The late model pumps have oval stainless steel retainers held in place with Torx screws that hold the fuel, pulse, and oil fittings onto the pump body. These style pumps are comepletely repairable and idividual parts are listed.

Re: Go change your old VRO !!!

just bought one of the new pumps, and its good to know they're rebuildable because this's the 2d replacement since this 225 was new in '90 - each time, surging has been the signal, so I'll strip this old one and see what's failed so I can save some $ the next time it happens.
