Temperature Guage Sending Unit Adjustment

I have an 1987 OMC V4 that has an after market engine temperature guage on the dash. The sending unit is mounted on the head via one of the head bolts. I am putting in new head gaskets and am about to put it back together.<br /><br />Should the sending unit be in direct contact with the head or is there a small gap? I don't remember how it was installed.

Hey solittle..how ya' doin. Seems head gaskets are in style. Just replaced mine on my 90 Rude.<br /><br />The sender is probably a thermocouple type sender. I would think direct contact would need to be made to get accurated temps. Any gap would let air flow between the sender and head maybe messin' up what ya' read on the gage. <br /><br />Sounds good anyway!! Nothin' like the SWAG theory.

Go to radio shack and buy a small tube of heat sink grease (they use it to attach heat sink to computer chips for good heat transfer) for a couple of $. Smear that on the head and sending unit and screw the sending unit down until it is snug against the head but not so tight as to damage it. It must have good solid metal to metal contact and the grease helps complete the contact.
