the new old boat is a 69 55hp johnson. told my son to change the lube in the lower unit, filled it with heavy marine gear lube, i believe . after two days of trolling( +/- 12 hours) we have milky gear lube oozing from the weep holes. no we didn't change the seals on the fill and vent screws (tomorrow i will, along with the lube) after searching this sight for like problems i found out we should have used a lighter type of lube because( i think) this engine has the hydro electric shift. could it be that we haven't taken years off the units life? hopefully the seals will do the trick. but i am concerned about thick lube causing damage in a system meant for thin lube. so how bad did we goof up? thanks folks for the help.

Probably not too bad. Just flush as much of the wrong stuff out as you can with the typeC. Fit new plug gaskets and test the L/U for vacuume and presure before you decide on further repairs.
