Hello all! I searched the forum questions and did not see a relevant answer so here goes.
I have a newly aquired '73 70 hp johnson 3cyl. model 65373. My question is where is the water pump telltale hole at on this engine? Most every
engine I've dealt with before has a stream of water coming out when the engine is running to let the operator know the water pump is working, but I don't see any water while my engine is running. After starting it the first time, I looked for the "stream" and I didn't see it, so I shut it down. The engine started fine and I ran it maybe 3 minutes before shutdown. Now I'm wondering if the waterpump is working. The engine sat for a couple of years before I got it.
Any help or leads to pics on the net would be most appreciated! Thanks!

I think it comes out around the prop. You should see some big air bubbles, if i'm correct.
;)

Redbeard - First welcome - lotsa help here. Now not all motors have telltales and I don't knnow if yours is supposed too. Take the cover off and look for some rubber hoses around the base of the engine. If your motor is designed for a telltale one of the hoses should go through the pan at the base of the motor. I suspect that yours does not have one, being a 73.

Your can run your motor anyway. Try starting it with the cover off and touch the heads as it runs. It should get quite warm but not to the point that it burns your fingers. In any case you should consider doing the following:

1. Get the OMC manual and parts catalog for your motor - OMC not the "others."

2. Plan on replacing either the impeller or the complete water pump. Also replace the thermostat.

3. Drain the gear oil out of the gearcase and refill per your manual.

3. Set of plugs.

4. Drain all fuel in lines and tank - start with fresh fuel/oil mix.

Forget the bubbles. I haven't seen one in 30 years comming out of a motor - but hey there might be a first time.

Howard

Thanks!
I'll have to try find a source for the manual, but I'll look/do the things you guys suggested (going to look at it tomorrow).
