I have a very old Johnson motor and I need information on the age, model number, and hp. It appears to be a 2 or 3 hp motor with the the following information on the top. Johnson Motor Co. Southbend, Ind., USA NO.A17016. Under this cover is stamped A40358. I also need information as to where I can obtain a copy of a service manual and other related manuals. The motor is in fairly good shape and I hope to restore it if I can obtain the needed information.

Hi, Luba.

The Model A was made from 1922 to 1924. It was 2HP.

You can get a lot more (and better) info from the antique outboard club site.

Good luck. :)

Re: Antique Johnson motor

Thank you for the information JB. I am looking to purchase an owners manual for this unit from "Ken Cook Co.". There are questions I have before ordering. The models listed for 2 hp Johnson motors around the years 1922 to 1924 are: 1916 A, 1915 A #50,000 up, 1915 A #55,000 up, and then it jumps to 1925 A-25. Might it be the 1916A??? Any insight will be most helpful.

Re: Antique Johnson motor

I never buy a KC manual for an antique until I place an ad on the classifieds and bulletin board at www.aomci.org
I say I'm willing to pay $5 to $10 for a photocopy of the manual for a certain model. Have only been disappointed once. For instance, if you were looking for a 41 Johnson KS or KD 15 manual I'd photocopy it for you for the price of the copying and postage. Just a thought. KC stuff is pricey and not always what you think it will be...better shut up now.

Re: Antique Johnson motor

Sloopy,

This note is in response to your reply on the my antique Johnson motor. You mentioned you might have a copy of the manual. Here are the details. It was built between 1922-1924 and is, i have been told, a model “A” which is rated at 2 hp. I have 2 numbers stamped into the unit. The Number A17016 is stamped on the top disc for the rope pull along with the name Johnson Motor Company. Under this cover is the second number. This number is more crudely stamped and is A40358. On the gas filter/float Johnson Motor Co. and Model "O" is noted. Thanks very much for offering assistance.
