With regard to fuel I have use fuel-oil with lead and 50:1 of oil is this correct?
Should i use unleaded fuel ?
I have change the spark plugs also and the seller have me gives some J8C champion
but I read on the sites that of the J6C are counseled. Is that kind of outboard work with J8C?
Last point he start well but it functions badly at full régime
and I remark that it works better without the cover
I have just bought rightly a documentation (clymer documentation) for this model of motor but he/it doesn't treat my problem
If the problem comes of a leak in the exhaust how can i repair it
In this book they speak a lot of the low speed needle valve adjustement and in the front of the engine there is a knob with graduation from 1 to 7 if see that turning it change the engine running how can i adjust it ?

Thanks for help me

Hello, Manu83.

Welcome to the iboats Bulletin Board.

Exhaust leaks are often found in the 9.5 Evinrudes. It causes the trouble you have.

Repair is to find and replace the leaking gasket. Your Clymer manual can guide you in this.

The Champion J6C spark plugs should improve high speed performance, but the J8C may be used as well.

You manual might help you in adjusting the low speed needle. A simple manner is to warm the engine, turn the needle to 1, then turn counter-clock-wise toward 7 until the idle is smooth.

Good luck. Please tell us of your results. :)

Hello Manu
It dose sound like your problem is exhaust gas leak. I would check powerhead to exhaust housing gasket, also the exhaust cover/plate gaskets. Check for cracks or holes in castings. Also check for air flow restriction in engine cover. May also be caused by a loose sound blanket. You might try a 25:1 oil mix for testing. This will make more smoke, might help you find the leak. The knob you refer to is the low speed needle adjustment. Turn it in to close (less fuel, out to open (more fuel). The adjustment must be made while engine is warm Idling in gear. Starting point will be 1.5 turns out from closed.

Manu..... That engine is designed to use unleaded fuel, and you may use the 50/1 mixture without worry (1pt of 50/1 oil to 6 gallons of gas).

As JB states, the J6C Champion s/plug would be a good plug. Set the gap to .030.

And as Alcan states, using a mix of 1 quart of oil to 6 gallons temporarily to help find the exhaust leak, that's a great idea.

You can adjust the carburetor nedle valve as follows:

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway. Good Luck....

Exhust leaks on the 9.5's are often caused by the shift shaft "boot". It's an accordian type of rubber seal that often gets ripped. If the motor is in salt water, I would guess that you'll never get the three screws out of the exhust housing. They are located way... up inside the lower exhust housing. Most people give up and just install a "vent" on the motor cover right over the carb. Good luck !!

Yes, I too have had problems with exhaust leaks on those motors as well. If they have been used in salt water you can't take them apart to repair them either.I used a spray can of "foam sealant" that you can get from the hardware store that is used for home insulation. I sprayed it inside of the outer exhaust housing. The foam expands and seals the leaks. It worked like a charm and was cheap too! Cheers! Bruce :)
