The timer base should move with the throttle arm and hit the stop (screw with a rubber bumper on it).

Once more - whats the timing set at?

lol...when it comes to electronics i am clueless, i took it to the local dealer and they said they timed it but i don't trust those guys anymore after this last tune up. when i go home i will check it out and get back to ya... sorry for so many questions but you seem very knowledgeable about motors and are helping me out tremendously

You need to check the timing under a load at as close to WOT as possible. Set the timing pointer to make sure its on TDC. Check timing on cylinders 1 and 2. They should be within a degree of each other.

Let us know!

ok the timer base does not hit the screw...its about 1/8th of an inch away from it. is there a way to adjust it?

Congrats! Most likely you just found a bunch of RPM's!

The timer base has a "plastic" ring that it rides on. Most likely all you gotta do is remove the flywheel and stator, loosen the tabs on the timer base and remove it. Take the ring off, clean the groove and ring. Lubricate it and replace everything. You can test it for freedom of movement after you clean and lubricate it.

Good job!

One more thing. Check the timing BEFORE you go run it hard. The timing was clearly retarded and was no way near full advance. But if it was (and we have to look further) it will be way advanced now and may melt a piston if its not set right.

You are close!

ok great i am gonna do that...i just started it and i hear a ticking noise. i located it and its the VRO pump. i am mixing my fuel in my tank now. is that gonna burn out my pump because there is not oil going through it? you can hear it tick at idle and its thumping.

Lots of times when they click that loud they are sucking air somewhere. Make sure the oil inlet is securly plugged off and check the complete fuel delivery system.

If its sucking air that means not enough fuel and that usually spells disaster for some unsuspecting piston.

Good luck!

what is the best way of plugging off those inlets and outlets? i put a piece of gas line on them with a wedge and hose clamped them off. if you have the cover on you can hear it but at idle with it off you can hear it plain as day.

A rubber cap made for fuel lines works as does a piece of fuel hose with a bolt and a clamp. And cap it off right at the pump.

Keep us informed!

when you say us does that mean us as in more then one of you or do you mean people on this board? its getting down to crunch time becasue i am leaving NJ for Lake Ontario at 130 so i have to do it at lunch so i won't be able to ask many questions later. When i cap this all off will all the clicking stop or will it still be there just not at loud? sorry for so many stupid questions but i'd hate to waste $2000 on my new powerhead! i think i am gonna have to owe ya a case of beer after my boat is fixed lol

Re: What is this hole for on my Evinrude?!?

Just ONE case? Dadgum I work cheap! Lol!

Not really! Just dont want to see anything bad happen to anybodys motor if it can be avoided. The loud clicking needs to stop. The loud clicking is because its pumping air in the lines instead of soild fuel. This condition may lead to a lean running motor and that is usually not good. Forgive me but I gotta ask this.....is the primer bulb installed correctly? Arrow pointing toward the motor? I'm sure it is but thats one of those things.........

Have a good trip. Im sure after you set the timing and get the oil inlet fitting capped off you'll be good to go.

Good luck!

Re: What is this hole for on my Evinrude?!?

well i took it out on the weekend. it seemed to go good after i cleaned it out. trolling was another story. i put in some fatter jets when i repowered it and i had 2x's the amount of oil so i am sure that is the problem on the trolling. the bulb was on right and the clicking i fixed. so i am close just gotta keep tinkering. i am sure i will be back on to ask more questions. thanks a lot

You say you put "fatter" jets in. If your carbs have jets in the roof of the throat and you go bigger on those you make the motor leaner because those are air jets.

Just a thought!

Re: What is this hole for on my Evinrude?!?

hey, would anyone know why my boat would stall when i am trolling but only when i am in the back of the boat? if everyone sits upfront i am fine but if someone goes in the back it seems to load up and stall. any help would be great!
