So I just picked up a pretty sweet little motor. Seems to be reasonably well cared for. So much so that I thought is was a lot newer than it is. Turns out it's a 1959! I still intend to get it going, but I have a dilemma. This thing needs a special tank. Pressurized right? Never messed with one like this before, but none of my hoses have the right fitting. Not having much luck finding the proper tank. What all do need to do to get to convert it for a normal tank?

That is a very beautiful outboard. If the inside is as well kept as the outside, you will enjoy it for years to come
I would open the cowling and see if it has a fuel pump. A lot of them have been converted over the years. Often without changing the connectors Personally, I would go the fuel pump and single hose way. Mostly, because I do not like pressurized hoses that may leak and spray fuel , possibly causing a fire. Just make sure to also close off the air outlet.

Look through inspection port on the flywheel.----Check for cracked coils.--Post picture of the 2 coils.-----Post picture of the powerhead.---Install a new water pump impeller before the first fishing trip.-----One weak point is the upper bushing on the wristpin.----Often worn out.----Run with 24:1 mix.----A transfer port cover (1960 to 63 ) can be found in numerous places to convert / mount a fuel pump.-----Your location ?

I have an identical one at the cottage.. easy to convert and has Racerone suggested if you can find a 1960s+ transfer cover it becomes a piece of cake to convert by simply installing an OMC square pump. then change the side connector for single line hose .

If you can't find a side cover you can drill the top one and mount a pump over a plate also drill behind the pump so the pulse will reach it. see one utube. If you do mount the pump on a plate or bypass cover just plug of the air pulse barb behind the carb. !
this is one method.

you could also drill and tap the transfer for a 1/8npt fitting to 5/16'' as a pulse line and use a 3 line pump i'd think? some guy sells conversion kits on ebay as well

another installation plate over original bypass cover plate ........pump is off-set a bit . don't forget to plug the air pressure nipple behind the carb

note: some pics not mine .. the round pump with gold mesh has given problems apparently so best o use square Mikuni or OMC pumps

Thank you gentlemen. Glad to hear I have options. One thing I'm not clear on though is I've seen some people say that there are check balls that need to be removed? From the "intake" if I'm not mistaken. Looks like you take the carb off and keep digging. I'll send some more pics once I get into it. Attaching a few from under the cowl.

Those do NOT have to be removed to convert to fuel pump operation.-----Jusr block off the air hose that feed pressure to the old style tank.----check the thermostat , as I often find them stuck open or missing.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Racer. Looks like I'm going to make my own cover. I found a nifty piece of 2x2x 3/16" alum tubing. Would that be thick enough to tap? Or maybe I can leave an ear on it to mount the pump to. Here's pics of coils as requested. They look fine, right? :p

Coils are scrap.----Sign that motor has likely not run in the last 30 years.

this what you find under the fw... themotor likely needs new condensenser ... points may be burnished but in doubt... replace and time per this video

may as well install new plug wires and boots to ! lots of utubes on the subject .
I use Belden automotive plug wires with metallic strand wire only !! and they come boots attached :)

much easier to get aftermarket coils and ignition modules. timing will always be perfect no matter how sloppy the mag bearing/plate is!

any links to source these modules $$$ ??? etc... Mag ingnition has been around for all these years and isn't that bad considering but if modules are cost effective ..

a lot of these oldies are perfectly fine and were used few hours /summer on trips then stored away most of their lives.

Just took apart 2 Johnson 6 HP powerheads.-----Near " freebies "------a 1966 had a blown head gasket.------Pistons . crank , rods were perfect.-----A 1971 model that had been re-assembled , but never run.----2 connecting rod needles missing.-----Crank , rods and pistons all good.-----Yes there are numerous low hour fishing motors out there.-----Many set aside and rarely used.-----Unlike modern ignition systems that fail suddenly , the wonderfully reliable " universal magneto " gives you a warning when it needs attention.----And 2 separate systems allows motor to run on 1 cylinder.----And you can repair these magnetos at home with a little learning.-----Unlike modern motors where you have to pay a labor rate of $150 / hr for a tech to read a manual., -----Then try and figure out what is wrong with the expensive sensors , injectors and fancy stuff.

i just picked one up yesterday 75$cdn :) lacked some TLC but hopefully will run good.

I prefer fixing them up instead of sinking white balls in holes in the grass and I get to keep/resell the motor.

Every small motor I lay my hands on seems pretty much unused, so I agree that at least in cold climates, a lot of these motors don't see a lot of use. So checked the compression, 70 per side seems pretty good to me. Anybody want to weigh in on whether 3/16" plate thickness is adequate for tapping out for hose barb? I'm tempted to slap two pieces on top of each other using JB Weld. Which would give me twice as much material so that I could mount the fuel pump right on top of it. Sound like a good idea?
