This motor hasn't ran in ten years. It has good compression, fuel is getting to carb, and the spark seems good. Yet it won't fire at all. It seems that the plugs are bone dry, even fully choked. Then I choke it fuel runs out of carb, but plugs are still dry. I have checked the carb jets, the float is level when inverted, the reeds look good. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like your carbs need a good cleaning. Spray a little fuel (just a very small mist) in the air intake and see if it will try to start. If so you know it is the carbs.

Are you using the two hose pressure tank? I believe that was required with those. Pump the primer on the tank a few times till it won't pump anymore. As it fires off you may need to pump it a couple more times till it gets pressure built up in the tank.

Thanks, Guys I'll go thru the carb again. This does have a pressured tank. I've checked for leaks and the tank will hold 3# of pressure.

Re: 1958 Evinrude Fastwin 18

I've been working on one of these myself. I had no succes until I changed the plugs to j8C Champions and played with the external carb adjustments. I found the low speed setting was best set at about 1 1/4 turns out (But start at 1 1/2 turns). High speed adjustment should be about 1 turn, although my engine ran better on the water at 3/4 turn. (You must set this on the water) Use full choke to start. Also remember that on that engine when in neutral, you can't rev the gas up very high. (It is mechanically stopped unless it is in forward). If you can get it started rev it up with the throttle on the carb, let it warm up and adjust from there. Good Luck!

Adam

Oh Yeah,

One more important thing. Make sure those O-rings on the fuel connector going to the engine are in good shape and not leaking fuel or air. Tight pressure is very important. I am not sure what the pressure should be, but 3# sounds low.

Adam

Correction on that spark plug. I used J6C not the J8C. I don't think the J8C would be appropriate. Sorry for the confusion!

Adam
