Iam know looking at buying this boat. 1983 Renken 18.5' 2.5L OMC. This is what was said Upon inspection, what happened is that the upper section of the OMC 400 sterndrive was low on fluid, and it overheated the upper bearing in that section. The engine and the lower section of the sterndrive are fine, and were not affected by the damaged bearing that is contained in the upper section. By just changing out the upper section, or even rebuilding it, this is a very easy repair that with give someone a really nice solid strong running boat.
How much work is this?? Can I do it myself with a manual?? Approx. how much money in parts??

http://www.sterndrive.info/id20.html heres a spot that will get you started. hopefully that the housings arent chewed up. and the ball gears in those.. yikes. a complete upper with brand new everything is like 2500.... you MUST find out why the fluid decided to go away. lol. so plan on a complete gasket and seal kit. dont forget the impeller. the bearings have to be loaded with the correct shims. so order extra shims as well. all the different sizes are nice this is a good site to surf around on lots of info. i dont know if iboats sells that stuff for those. chances are that if the bearings are blue then the gears got excessive wear on them as well.

the only way you could give me a stringer unit is if the price of scrap Aluminium was up and the unit was already loaded in the truck.
not that some did not survive to work mostly ok, the majority gave problems their entire short lives.
I am with Bondo, pass on this good deal and keep saving money towards the purchase of a good running boat.
usually when a seal leaks the shaft it rides on is damaged as well.
sometimes a new seal can bu but on a damaged shaft and will seal for a bit but usually it fails again soon.
some of that shafting is very expensive.
