I have a few questions, im trying to finish the installation of a 6.2 mercruiser efi motor in a 97 rinker, which had a 260 carb motor in it. with a bravo 2 drive.
First, when we had the outdrive on a shop cart, disconnected from the boat, somehow the mechanism that holds the shift cable got pushed back up into the outdrive. is this going to be a problem? if i push the shift cable into it, will it still latch ok?
second, the lug on the starter silenoid that all the hot wires connect to is smaller than on the old starter. is this just because of a newer version?I followed the instructions of DON S and also borrowed a alignment tool from a dealer for the weekend, i have the motor in, and bolted down, and aligned, just need to hook up the rest and then try to crank it. any advise would be appreciated

OH NO!!!!! WORST THING THAT COULD HAPPEN!!!!

Just kidding, you need to reach in there with some needle nose pliers and pull it out. The latch has to be out and up in order for the cable to go into it.

Regarding the starter, as long as it's a marine starter, it shouldn't be a problem.

Re: trying to finish motor installation

OK Got that solved, just had to grab it like i Was pulling a tooth, it came back out.

Now the starter issue. the old motor had about 3 red wires coming off the starter seliniod, on the primary big terminal. should go back the same on the new motor, even if the terminal is smaller in DIA? I think that at this point the power will resume in the whole boat, and ill be able to listen to stereo as i finish
thanks

Re: trying to finish motor installation

Hudman, you pulled that cable out, but please make sure the "jaws" spread apart. When you are reinstalling the drive, as best as you can, watch the cable end stick into those open jaws. If the jaws kinda clamp around that little round nub on the cable end, you are golden. If not, you'll be able to put the boat in forward, but not get it out of gear, or have reverse. I say this, cause I did it wrong once, and had to reload the boat & do it all over again!
I agree, if all the wire connected in one place on the old, connect in the same place on the new, even if you have to change a wire end or two, cause of the diameter difference of the post.

getting closer, the only thing i have to figure out now is where the 2 black wires that come out of the hull, in ghe transom gimbal area, plug in? they have something to do with trim limits and stops, they are like a lamp cord, 2 black wires together.
Getting CLOSER!!!
