I have a 1978 260 hp 350 mercruiser the rear motor mounts have been replace with the new style. You sent me the picture of mounts and it explained about the shim kit and the fact that you may or may not need the shims. I have tried it with the shim and without. The tool goes in to the spline but no further I tried moving the front of the motor up and down no luck. Also it had a new coupling last year. It seems to be hitting the top of the spline and i have the shims in could it possibly need two shims. Any ideas you might have thank you

Re: question for don

Did you take out the double lockwasher that is used with the old style mounts?

Re: question for don

Are you sure the mounts were installed with the serated edge down, and the spacer ring installed above the mount when installed into the flywheel cover? (item 30)

Re: question for don

the serated edge is down But I don't know about the spacer ring. They wouldn't have to move those when they replaced the motor would they? How do you take it out? do you have to pull the motor or just lift one side at a time?

Re: question for don

Those rings come out when the old mount is removed. The only way to install one if they are missing is to remove the mount (this will usually destroy it) and reinstall them with the ring in first, and the proper direction. And to do that, the flywheel housing has to be on the bench.

Re: question for don

Is ther anyway to tell if the ring is in or not without taking them out?

I dont know why Mercruiser just dosent leave well enough alone. The old style mounts have been perfect all these years ,why change.they go in either way, use the double wound washer, install and tighten down, and your done.not this "seratted side down" stuff. shims? where do you put them or even get them."If It Aint Broke, Dont Fix It"

My thoughts exactly. They have now taken a simple job and complicated it to be almost impossible for anyone to explain or fix cheaply.
They also have a new raw water pump design that tops the motor mount boondoggle.

http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=016440

Re: question for don

NO. It needs to have all the right parts in the right place to work.

Re: question for don

ok I have the alignment tool in the gimbal bearing up to the the coupling it wont go in. so i get in the boat and feel around the tool at the sline. theres at least an1/8 inch more room on the starboard side than on the port. i tried moving the front of the motor towards the port side but it didn't make much difference. i also noticed that port side motor mount has one hole that is slotted where the lag bolts go through is this supposed to the front or rear? there is no slot on the other side. but back to my problem if the rear motor mounts never move how how can i be so far off sideways with the gimbal bearing.

Re: question for don

You do realize the inner part of the gimbal bearing could be off side to side, up or down, even at 45° angle from the outer part of the bearing.
You need to get the shaft into the end of the coupler, then with a rubber mallet, tap the alignment bar all directions to align the gimbal bearing. Then align the engine to fit. go back and tap the bar again readjust until you get it right.
Think about your rear mounts. There are no slots for them to move sideways. You would have to force the engine sideways to flex the rubber in the rear mounts, and you would never get the coupler off 1/8" from side to side without breaking something and knowingly forcing things.

No I did not realize that I guess I should have told you were advising a dummy LOL. I got the bar started by tapping with rubber mallet went in about an inch. now i need to raise the front up until it goes in easy. right now the front is down as far as it will go. how precise is this are we talking a thread or two on the front mounts?

THANK YOU! THANK YOU ! THANK YOU! I got it just one more ? I can push it in and pull it out with one hand not too much resistance but I heard somewhere you should be able to do it with two fingers? Do I need to fine tune alittle more or is it ok?

Re: question for don

Sounds like you are getting real close. Try 1/2 turn and see if it helps. If it stays about the same your good. If it gets better. Well..... it't better.
