chevy outboard difference

just wondering to settle good beer argument wether a chevy outboard block is the same as a regular vehicle block i beleive the cranks are different but the block i really don't know.

never seen a chevy outboard <br />but most all the standard marine blocks are truck units.

i really meant inboard too many beers but thanks for being kind ,really thought that it could have been but old freind said that the block on a 230 omc he had was heavier than a regular truck block i said no way. thanks alot

I think GM only used the 230 in 63-64-65.In 66 it got replaced with 250.

he had an 81 thompson sidewinderx-19 sold it for 400.00 cuz the motor locked up showed me pictures and the valve covers had 230 omc on them thats why I assumed thats what it was. Wish I could have got that deal.

I think he means the 230 Hp motor not the 230 CID motor. and I think the 230 CID was inproduction with the 250 CID and there were at least 2 versions of the 250 CID. in cars it was common to designate by CID and boats did it by HP. just marketing

Nope!!!The 250cid replaced the 230cid.in 66. They wasnt in production togather.They did have two or maybe even more versions of the 250cid.I believe GMC even had a version of their own.If they were in the same year,I dont know about it.If they did,I would like to know more about it.When he said 230,I thought he meant CID,that blowed my little mind!!

What he has is a 350 SBC. Minus the marine stuff, it's the same basic block as your auto/truck block. The marine cams are different, but a truck cam is very close. If one were to drop another block into it straight out of an auto without changing cams, performance would suck.

My 1970 Chevy Nova came with a 230 "Turbo Thrift" inline 6 mated to a 2 speed powerglide automatic. I don't think GM did away with the 230 until the 70's.

As stated before.. the "230" is horsepower, not cid. OMC did not use an inline-6 in the '80s. <br /><br />They had two 4 cyl... 120, 140<br />... a V-6, 170<br />... and two V-8's... a 305 (200hp w/2bbl, 225 w/4bbl)also a 350 (230hp w/2bbl, 260hp w/4bbl)<br /><br />I think those are pretty close, didn't look them up in the book.

in the boating world not in the auto world<br /> the 230 CID was in Production with the 250 CID. was used in all kinds of low end stuff. the 235 was gone by the mid sixties and was never popular in a boat. the 292 shared a lot of stuff with the 250 and was the most popular for hot rodding but I dont think the 292 CID was ever marinized. but most likly someone did it somewhere. until displacement in liters was popular boats marketed their stuff by rated HP and auto's did it by CID. and on OMC v8's ya forgot all about the 460CID 330-340 HP ford.<br /> so like I said, ya have to be careful with the nomenclature when disscussing marinized auto engines and boats.

Rodbolt,<br /><br />Just a bit of history, Mercruiser used the 292 engine for a couple of years back in the '60s with a 4bbl. carb and called it 200hp. I'm going from memory here but I think its correct.

could have. were a lot of engines used then. many for only a year or two. but I was still in elementary school then . but the sixties were some exciting times for american iron.

OMC also used some Ford 302 and 351;s in the 80's I think. Merc got out of using Fords in '77 with the slight exception of the 3.7.

According to my books Jason, there were no Ford blocks in the '80s. Only Cheby block v-8's.<br />but, books have been known to be incorrect. I know Boomyal has an OMC FORD V-8, but his is '70ish vintage originally.

OMC definitely used the 5.8 (351) & the 7.5 (460) in the 80's, and into the 90's.....Esp. in Bayliners......JK

Not 230 hoursepower, 230 CID, it was a 6. 1970, I think you are wrong about the years GM used the 230 6.
