Merc I/O 140 water pump

I have MerCruiser Stern Drive Serial number 4668934 should it have an oil seal in the top half of the water pump which would seal drive shaft to internials of water pump or not ? <br />My system has a heat exchanger.

Check out this site that have a parts exploded view. Just look up your motor by yr and serial # give part#'s as well. dougrussell.com

I have check a Seloc rebuild manual and it says "late model drive units do not have this oil seal in the pump body". The boat/leg/motor combo is about 1977 vintage. Question is will I get a better pumping action with seal ?
