I just removed the spark arrestor from my 4.3 merc and need to clean it, should i just use carb cleaner? it's pretty dirty. Is there a less restrictive filter/arrestor for this engine? Thanks!

Soak it in a coffee can or similar of Mineral Spirits, and its called a flame arrester. Also see how fast the spirits fall out when you pull it out? Its not restrictive at all. K+N's are pretty pricey, and you application doesn't warrant one...but its your money

Oh they aren't? I heard they are really restrictive. But, they could be lip service.

Re: Cleaning the intake

Well, in "SBC Marine Performance", K&N arrestors and stacks are one of the only products Dennis Moore recommends by name and brand...<br /><br />"The high performance filters are literally the only filter used by professional race teams though out the world....The surface area of the K&N filter is many times that of a typical flame arrestor, allowing for an extremely free-flowing design. This pleated design also acts to straighten and channel the airflow passing through it. This is very important on a boat with an open engine compartment... along with straightening and channeling effect of the filter, the base of the the K&N arrestor is radiused to gently turn the air into the carb... because a flame arrestor can never be too large, the K&N flame arrestor should be installed with a K&N filer element chosen that is the tallest that will fit in the engine compartment..."<br /><br /><br />Funny thing is, I think they are usually less expensive than a stock flame arrestor.

Re: Cleaning the intake

I just switched out my stock flame arestors on twin 4.3 EFIs to Gaffrig stainless steel 8"x3" FA<br />they not only look a lot better, I picked up a couple of miles more at WOT. Pricey yes, but I thought they were worth it
