I have had to re wire the 40 hp I have had to re wire all of it as someone had cut the harness off right at the motor. I also did not get a igntion switch . I purchased a switch at TSC but I'm not sure what to do with the mag wire (black ) or the other wire (Black /white) ther teminals on the switch are
acc, bat, start, igntion. I have wired cars in the past I'm just not sure how to deal with the mag.

No place to put them on that switch.
You'd have to put another Normally Open (N.O.) switch (pushbutton usually) on the dash and hook them there. When the wires are connected, the engine dies. When not connected, it runs.

This ignition switch would work (no electric choke function):

This would work if you wanted to keep the ignition switch that you had and added a kill button:

TSC? If it is not a marine specific switch, don't use it. You'll blow the coils.

My bad, I missed the part about using the push-button for kill switch....Maybe one day I'll learn to read ;)

This roughly what you're trying to get it to look like:

Re: 66 evinrude 40hp mag wires

ok i'm going with the momentary push button for kill
just to confirm (don't want to fry stuff) the wires need to go on either side of the N/O switch so that when it is pressed to N/C the wires would be connected.

I was told by someone they should both be on one side and the other to ground.

so just trying to clear it up

You are correct. The other guy was wrong. Once the wires touch each other or ground, it will not run.

Take the dumb car/tractor switch back to TSC and get the right one. Why dink around with it? They sell magneto switches here at iboats and everywhere else marine parts are sold.

at that point I would use one of the kill switches from a PWC the one with the cord .. thus if you pull away from the helm for any reason the motor will die I am looking for one now in my local shops or a dead PWC to add to my motor
