Hey guys, I have a J150GTLCUR 1987 and I just replaced the water pump. I'm fairly certain I did this correctly. The outboard has been sitting for 5 years so i didn't expect a smooth rebuild but here's the problem i'm having...

I turned the motor over for the first time today on muffs. after priming and letting the starter do it's work for a few seconds (10-20) the motor would start and run on idle for about 20 seconds then i shut it down when i noticed there was no water coming out of the pee hole. I checked the hose and the pee hold itself for blockages and there aren't any.I ran it 2 or 3 more times and still no water from the telltale.

I read on a few threads here about the tstats possibly being seized so i decided to give them a look. I took them out and the area of around the head that you can see when you take the stats out looked bone dry which told me that no water was even getting to them. When they were out I boiled them and they are working fine.

I planned on taking the lower unit off:)mad: what a pain) tomorrow to check the water pump but Im not really sure what to look for. My main theory now is the pipe that lets the water get into the block fromt he water pump is possibly blocked. Should I run a hose to that pipe directly and see if water come out somewhere? Any help would be appreciated.

Here are 3 of the more common things I have seen people do ........

the impeller is cupped in the wrong direction

the key holding the impeller is either the wrong size, wasn't inserted properly, or they just forgot to put it in

or in the case of the last Evinrude I bought, the guy reassembled the pump and put the plate on the bottom of the cup, thereby totally blocking the water passage so the water pump was not able to pump any water.

oh wait, there is a 4th, the water tube didn't get aligned properly.

Don't feel bad if it's one of those, it happens, at least you didn't take it out on the lake until it melted down like some others have done.

Shoot me a PM and let me know what you find. I went through the same thing. I will tell you what I found and how I corrected it. I saved a ton of $$$ taking care of the same problem.

Just got the lower unit off. I carefully slid a piece of wire up the water intake pipe and there is definitely a blockage. Does anyone know how to remove this pipe?

Did the flush. Everything seemed to have come out well. Perhaps the muffs weren't allowing enough water flow for it to be pulled into the block.

Going to try it in a 55 gallon drum and see if I can get it to pee...

Checked the direction of the impeller. I know it's right.

I ditched the muffs and ran it in a tank. The water level appeared to be just above the level of where the water pump is. Still no sign of water being pulled through the system.

Blown head gasket?

I'm at a loss.

I also rebuild a water pump after 8yrs of sitting and had the same problem. Mine turned out to be a small piece of old impellor stuck inside the "pee" hole. Good luck
