Hello all,

I was looking for some opinions from some boaters with knowledge on my situation. I have an early 1970's mercruiser 120 with an external crack in the block. This thing fires right up and sounds great, and has absolutely no water going into the oil. After you fire it up, it has a small water drip out of the crack. I was just considering JB welding the crack as a cheap fix, seems as how it doesn't seem to be causing any more problems right now. Obviously, getting it welded would be the best option, but i'm trying to avoid putting to much time and money into an old engine. Has anyone else attemted this with success?

Thanks in advance,
Todd

Hi buddy

Go for the JB mate. Clean the area well - of all grease, oil, paint etc.

Go half inch each side of the crack.

Worse thing that can happen is it doesn't work and you have to pull it to get it welded - which is where you are now :)

But from experience i have run engines for years with small cracks repaired with JB - and as long as the crack is only leaking out - ie not into the block/oil etc - no worries.

Keep an eye on the oil - for water contamination - as we all do anyway.

Get out and enjoy it :D:D

cheers
