Re: Johnson Outboard wont stay running

Using the primer solenoid bypasses the carburetor and injects fuel directly into the intake manifold. On choked motors it forces a richer mix of gasoline into the intake manifold.

If that is the only way to keep the engine running, the usual indication is that your carburetor needs cleaning.

Re: Johnson Outboard wont stay running

I have the same engine and it was running fine until I put Startron fuel treatment in the latest tank of fuel at the recommendation of my boat mechanic. While on vacation it would not idle and started stalling out when going into gear. So I have replaced the fuel filter and sent for carb rebuild kits. One recommendation I got was to do the link and sync adjustment to set the idle and engine timing. To do this I sent for the OEM service manual having read here on the forums that the Clymer and Seloc manuals are not that good. So my plan is to do the link and sync adjustment to see if that cures the problem. If not then I will rebuild the carbs and put a fuel/water separating fuel filter in line with the tank supply line. You can read a whole lot of conflicting opinions on E-10 gasoline and additives and problems. I wish I would have never used the additive since until that point the boat has been running fine for 20 years. So it sounds to me like your idle jets have become plugged and a carb rebuild is in order. If you do make sure to use the Johnson factory carb kits and not aftermarket kits.
