I have replaced the head gasket on my 2005 3.0L and keep blowing it in a couple hours of run time. I had the head milled and the block checked but nothing solves the problem. Can timing be the problem?

Re: 2005 3.0L Mercuriser head gasket

I am following the torque and bolt sequence but didn't know about any service bulletin on the timing, all my manuals say timing is 2 deg after top dead center. If is also stated on the cover of the flame arrestor, 2 deg ATDC. Thanks you may have saved me a lot of work and money.

I noticed that this service bulletin doesn't cover my engine S/N or year but sure sounds logical. My engine did seem to run hotter than I thought it should be (175). Do you know of a Mercruiser tech service phone no?

Also try running it up to operating temp and then let it cool back down to ambient temp and retorque.

Chase the bolt threads

Thoroughly clean the bolt holes.

Check the depth of the holes. We want to make sure the bolts are not bottoming out.

Use new head bolts.

Oil the bolts.

After oiling them, let them sit at least a few minutes. Allows the excess oil to drip off.

How many times has this happened?

I did all these suggestions. I think i have this problem down to timing. I will post results in a week or so when I know for sure. thanks for the help.

I tried this the third time but didn't help. I think the problem is timing. I'll post the results when I am sure after I try it again. thanks for the help.

I would really look at those head bolts closely if you aren't just replacing them every time. I have been told by numerous engine builders that they do stretch considerably and can cause compression loss almost instantly. I can speak form experience that I have went through this twice in the last 5 years and have taken all of the above procautions to eliminat this form happening again and so far so good (knock wood!!) But I do lean strongly torward temp, and timming as a culprit. But all in all these are good strong little engines but! once these issues arise they seem to have a chain of events if they aren't comletely torn down and rebuilt. I for one will not go through this again I plan on upgrading to v6 and or v8 a.s.a.p. Good luck post back results

I'm facing a potentially similar repair - What did you end up doing? Did it work?

If you have in fact blown a gasket make sure after tear down the mating surfaces are flat within specs I believe it's a couple of thou over a 6'' span if not have them re-surfaced, clean all head bolts and inspect for stretch or just replace, clean theads in the block and coat with thread sealer, re-assemble torque to spec run up to operaing temp after setting proper timming and then re-torque. Good luck!
